Honey for Infection

Honey forms a part of most forms of traditional medicine and is recommended in the treatment of infections. As a form of treatment, honey for infection is considered to be very effective. Infections are caused by pathogenic organisms such as bacteria which multiply rapidly and affect the individual. Honey for infection of the throat is very common. This is because honey helps to soothe the throat as well as stimulate the person’s immune system. Honey for infection of the stomach is also quite common. Honey contains strong antibacterial qualities that are especially effective in eliminating bacterial infections of the gastrointestinal tract. A mixture of honey and yogurt is often recommended for those with stomach ailments as yogurt contains beneficial bacteria that help to prevent harmful bacteria from multiplying. This remedy is often recommended for those with weak digestive systems as it helps to strengthen the immune system as well as the stomach.

Honey can also be used to treat cuts, bruises, wounds, and burns. Honey for infection of wounds is also an age old remedy. Honey is hygroscopic in nature which basically means that it has the ability to draw in moisture from its surroundings. Thus applying honey to a wound provides it with a moisturizing sealant that prevents infection. If infection has already set in, the antibacterial qualities of honey help it to fight off the invasive pathogens at the site of the infection. Furthermore, since hone y contains several vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, applying it directly to the injured skin will help to provide the damaged skin with the nutrients it requires to repair itself. Honey can also be used for mild infections that are caused by repeated peeling of scabs. This is most commonly seen in children and this habit can cause lasting scars and blemishes. Children tend to scratch off their scabs as the healing process causes the scab to lose moisture and harden. This in turn decreases the overall size of the scab and since it is joined to the skin it causes the skin in the surrounding area to stretch. It is this stretching that makes the affected area itch. Applying honey to the scab helps to prevent it from drying and this reduces the itching. Furthermore, since the scab remains moist for longer, it will take longer to fall off which reduces the chances of permanent scarring. Honey should not be used to treat infections in toddlers as raw honey can cause a rare but serious medical condition known as botulism.
