Honey Food

Honey is an organic food that acts as a natural sugar alternative that’s easy to digest, adapts to almost all cooking processes and is also non-perishable. Honey as food has recently been discovered on account of its ability to be a natural source of energy. Honey is known to contain all the B complex group vitamins, essential minerals, enzymes, amino acids, and other vital nutrients. Honey foods are one of the easiest foods to digest as it contains anti microbial and anti bacterial properties. Honey is also used as a substitute for sugar in many recipes. Additionally honey is used as a sedative, laxative and antiseptic. Honey is available in different types of flavors and colors and these range form distinctively bold to delectably mild depending on which flowering plant the honey bees have harvested the nectar from. Honey as food may not be a healthy option for some people especially children under the age of one year as they may suffer from a sever allergic reaction to the honey known as “infant botulism” which could be fatal if the honey is consumed by  the infant in large amounts. However there are some types of honey commercially available wherein the honey is pasteurized and filtered so that the quantity of bee pollen is low and hence the cases of allergic reaction after consuming such honey is also rare. Besides, honey food products are also used in various pharmaceutical, cosmetics and also used in varnishes and furniture polishes. Honey blends well in most dishes and not just desserts.

Honey is often used in main courses such as Honey-basted roasts, salmon fillets with white wine and honey and also chicken. While using honey in food and the honey is crystallized, the container should be place din hot water for 10 to 15 minutes as this should help the honey return to its liquid state. While cooking honey it should not be heated in a microwave as it tends to alter the taste of the honey by increasing the HMF content of honey. A handy hint while preparing honey foods is to use honey in its liquid form so that its does not stick to the measuring spoons and cups. If honey is being used as a sweetener instead of sugar then it should be used less in quantity. Additionally the cooking temperature should not be too high while cooking with honey as honey tends to cause foods to brown very quickly.
